Microsoft Challenges Gmail Hegemony

Microsoft

Many Hotmail users received an ominous email from Microsoft on Tuesday informing loyal Hotmail users that the company will be converting their accounts to Outlook.com by the summer thus ending a decades-long love affair between the seemingly archaic Hotmail service and users who missed the Gmail train.

Microsoft is truly going for the kill and is believed to spend between $30 million to $90 million to finance the Outlook campaign. The marketing blitz seems to take place in the more conventional mediums considering Google’s edge regarding online marketing. Microsoft will be expected to fill the airwaves, billboards and buses with ads luring unsuspecting e-mail junkies to its new service. Most tech-conscientious folks have chosen Gmail over other services, leaving Hotmail and Yahoo into the crazy 90’s.

Earlier in February, Microsoft launched an anti-Gmail campaign depicting Google’s flagship service that spies on its users in order to target them with marketing that correlates with the content of messages exchanged.
